Orienteering sports 08/03/'17

This lesson was all about orienteering. Apparently this is also considered as a real sport. Certainly one I did not know so far. Walking/running from one point to another point, using a plan to get there, is the intention of this sport. I was curious...

Although it is a course form the international program, there are a lot of Portugese students who also participate in these lessons. To be honest, it felt really strange at first. We did not know any students among them an moreover they speak a language that I can not speak. But, I am open to everything, so why not.

At the start of the class, we were expected by our regular teacher and the second sports teacher of our school. (If we have lessons with the Portugese students, there are two teachers because we are with to many students otherwise) This man told us the necessary know-how before we would get started.
He began to tell exactly what the sport was and what our mission was of today.

After a short instruction, it was finally our turn. We got a map/plan of the school domain. On the plan were 20 points marked with numbers. The intention was that we (pairs) could walk from one point to another as fast as possible. At each point, there was a ribbon with a code. We needed to take over the code on the extra paper we received before.

Nice assignment, I thought to myself. Stefanie and I started to look at the plan, so we would know where to go. Suddenly the teacher came to tell us that we could not work together. We had to find one of the Portugese guys to work with. Awkward!
At that moment I felt really small.. I didn't know anyone of these people and it was also the very first time that I saw them. I had no clue what to expect from it.

It didn't took long before I found myself a Portugese partner to start the assignment with. When we got the start-signal, I made a click in my head and began to ask him a lot of questions. We even shared the same interests and could get along very good. Also during the orienteering we were able to work well together and make fun at the same time.
Because he knew the school domain better than me, he had the plan and I would take care of the administration. (the codes)
My insecurity and the feeling of fear that I had at the start of the assignment quickly disappeared. Simon and I accomplished our orienteering assignment. All codes were correct!

After the orienteering assignment, we went back to the classroom with all the students. Together with the teacher, we reflected about our assignment and the experience we gained.

Overall, unexpectedly, I found it a very nice lesson where I learned a sport activity which I can apply in a third grade of primary school. Children get the opportunity to develop their orientation capabilities and they can do it at their own pace, which is also very important.
In addition, it is also an ideal activity to get to know each other betters, as you are also dependent on each other because you have to leave together and come back together.

I loved it!
