What triggers students to create e-portfolio's?

After entering the room, where the seminar took place, I found myself a good seat in front. A few people were waiting for the rest to arrive. The seminar started with some welcoming words from the director of the school, Pedro Dominguinhos. He showed us the schedule of the day and what we could expect from the seminar.

What is an e-portfolio?

An e-portfolio is actually nothing more than a digital collection of artifacts that belong to a person. For us as a student it can be an essay, posters, photographs, videos, artwork, and other course-related assignments.

Like a Learning Management System, ePortfolios exist online and support student learning. They differ from Learning Management Systems in two key ways: namely, ownership and control. In a university course, the Learning Management System is “owned” and controlled or managed by the instructor: he or she decides who has access, what tools are turned on or off, and so on. With an ePortfolio, it tends to be the student who is in charge: he or she decides who can view the ePortfolio, what artifacts get added, how it is designed, and so on. Typically, a student loses access to the Learning Management System when courses end; in contrast, many ePortfolio platforms are designed to follow the student after he or she has finished university.

What do students want?

The seminar started with Julie Choistealbha, a woman from Ireland who came to tell us more about the topic. More specific about what the students actually want and need from an e-portfolio.

To find out what the students wanted, they did an interview on the basis of a survey.
Surprisingly the results were positive. Most of the students were talking positive about working with e-portfolio's. They thought it could be very useful for their education.

To be honest, i am not quit sure what to think about the use of e-portfolio's. On the one hand I also think it is a very useful thing to work with. Not only because you can work fast and you can communicate with other students when you have questions or you can look at other profiles to see how you can do certain things. It is also a very creative proces for every student individual. You can create your own e-portfolio as you like it yourself. you can also write about the things you want to write about, or there must be a specific topic that teachers gave you.

But on the other hand, not everyone can work with computers as good as someone else. Me for example, I think it is very difficult to work with e-portfolio's. I always have a few ideas in mind but when I have to translate it into computerwork, I always fail to that. And it is quite disappointing to know that the thing you wanted to do is a very good idea but the practical side of the idea is not that easy to do. Moreover, it can be very confusing sometimes.

One of two aspects I considered relevant and why?

The fact that teachers want to introduce e-portfolio's to make it easier for the students is something that I really appreciate. And also the creative proces that comes together with creating an e-portfolio is one of the most relevant aspects of the idea of e-portfolios. Students can use their on creativity to make their e-portfolio. They can write whatever they want to (as long as it is course-related), and they can do by their own style. Everyone is different and the fact that teachers allow the students to be creative on their own way is super relevant for me. I like the idea of creating something where I can be proud at, because I created it.

What are the most important characteristics for the learning process?

Teachers are letting us free to write something on the e-portfolio whenever we want to. It is the students it's responsibility to have the need and the motivation to work on it and to update occasionally. Another important characteristic is the fact that it allows to be creative. Students can decide how to handle things and how to create their own portpolio. E-portfolio's also make it easy for friends to check your work, it can serve as inspiration for your own blog. To receive feedback from teachers is also an interesting fact about the portfolio. It is way more easy than to wait to see the teacher again.
And you can keep the portfolio forever, you can always look back at what you did as a student.
