Moscatel de Setubal

Moscatel de Setubal

The Moscatel de Sétubal is one of the most famous specialties in the region. A tasteful, sweet, fortified dessert wine. At least that's what the Portuguese people think about it. For me, personally, this wine was way too sweet, I didn't like it. It is a fortified wine which means that during fermentation, when the desired search content is reached, fermentation is stopped by addition of wine alcohol. Around 17-18% alcohol is added. The Moscatel is the most produced dessert wine. You have him with and without years. Older Moscatels, for example, are more expensive because they have taken care of for a very long time. We could find such barrels in the hostel where we were. The wine in these barrels was still ripe.

When we arrived at the winery, we were first accompanied by a guide at an old mansion where former wine was made. You could see on the photos how this wine was made and what materials they used for it. Over the years it has been somewhat modernized, but the ripening of the wine is still the same old way; in the barrels in a cold, damp basement. The duration of ripening depends on the type of Moscatel you want.
After that we could take a look in the ornamental garden behind the winery. The sun was so beautiful to see. After looking at the ornamental garden we were taken to the dark, cold, wet place, where 500 barrels of wine were ripened in layers. You had different types of barrels, such as barrels with a diameter of no more than 3 meters. The somewhat smaller vessels had a diameter of about 1 meter. This was very fascinating to see! The Moscatel can be served in a variety of ways. You can drink it as an aperitif or as a dessert wine. It's just what you like best.
In Portugal, however, it is a delicacy to drink it with all kinds of cakes (including the Torta de Azeitao), fruit cakes, vanilla sauce flakes, fresh fruit cocktails, ... Personally, I was not a fan of the dessert wine, but I can assume that many people like this wine and can drink it as an aperitif as a dessert wine. This wine is also available in Belgium, so lovers of a sweet, fortified wine know what to do! :)
